Attaching magnet to wood gate

Any tips for attaching the rectangular magnet for Sensative Guard to a wooden fence gate? 

When I installed last year, I sanded the end of the gate to make a smooth surface, then stuck the magnet on with its adhesive.  By the end of the season it was falling off.

Thanks for any ideas...
